Start of the fight : 07/05/2012
Fight won by : Margalida Maria
This fight came about when the Mallorcan government officially endorsed the construction of a 5 star hotel on a site adjacent to a protected area Natura 2000 in Es Tranc-Salobrar. The government authorised this project without even commissioning a preliminary study. This exploitation would impact on a protected zone, even though the actual terrain in question is open to urban development.
The aim of this battle is to prevent the validation of the project, to have the terrain in question designated as a non-buildable area, and to demand for it to be classified as a protected area Natura 2000 by the highest instances. The Keeper, Margalida Maria, is studying the relevant legislation in more depth to provide solid data on the environmental hazards involved in the construction of such a hotel. In September 2012, the association 'Grup Balear d’Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa'(GOB)*, of which the Keeper is a member, organised a festival around the issue of coastal artificialisation. The event was a great success and showed how much the Mallorcan population is pitted against this project.
Within the framework of the 'Salvem sa Ràpita'** campaign, the association GOB carried out various mobilisations and social awareness-raising actions on this issue. On the 29th of April 2012, more than 10,000 people took part in a human chain on the beach of Sa Ràpita. The association also involved tourists by distributing post cards at the airport with the following message: "Do you like this beach? They want to destroy it. Help us to preserve it." A reprint of the post cards is planned for the summer of 2013.
